Effective Exercise Prescription

An informalinitial consultation will provide an opportunity for me to understand you and your requirements. Together we will understand what can be achieved, how this can be achieved and when. I will design a personal fitness programme tailored to your requirements and aspirations. Person fitness assessments will be ongoing to monitor your progress throughout your programme.

You will train in the comfort of your own home utilising local spaces and a variety of specific equipment.

I do not advocate a ‘military’ style of ‘training until you drop’, as I do not believe that this approach is of any use to most people. Primarily, any exercise has to be safe and effective. Exercise should also be specific to effective day-to-day functioning.

I will ensure that your exercise sessions are specific, structured and motivating. Your personal exercise sessions will be specific to your needs.

You can choose to have one to one exercise sessions with me or share your sessions with up to two others, friends or family. These sessions allow the enjoyment of exercising with family or friends, with a common goalin mind.

You may be at the starting out stage, bored of your present routine or have special requirements. Whatever stage you are at, you can have complete confidence in my ability to ensure that your goals are realised.

Fat management (weight management) is increasingly becoming a very desirable skill. I will help you to manage your body fat through specific exercise and optimum nutritional practices.

Throughout an exercise programme, I recommend regular massage. This will promote relaxation and normal functional activity of your muscles.

Personal nutrition programs - Optimum Nutrition

Nutrition is the foundation of a strong, disease resistant body that can also heal itself quickly. What you put into your body absolutely affects how your body will be able to perform. The reason behind this is that the human body builds all of its 100 trillion cells from the chemical mix put in. Therefore, if rubbish goes in, not much can be built from this. Sound nutrition, with the right chemical mix, is therefore vital to allow the body to function optimally.

Good nutrition will improve health and vitality, exercise performance, weight management and improve healing time from injuries. Indeed, a strong body is less likely to get injured or ill in the first place!

As part of an effective fat (weight) management programme, I will train you in a combination of optimum nutrition and specific exercise to ensure the best results. I do not promote crash dieting - I believe this increases both body fat levels and the risk of ill health.

Massage

Sports Massage

Sports massage is very beneficial through a number of physiological and psychologicalreasons. Good sports massage is an essential part of your exercise or sports programme on a regular basis.

Through soft tissue manipulation, sports massage restores normal functional activity to various structures of the body. Sports massage will improve your performanceby putting your body in a better physical condition, functionally.

Body Massage

This is a very nice treatment for you to unwind at any particular time from exercise, business or life.

I believe that psychologically a good body massage will reduce your stress levels whilst promoting well being and vitality. Physiologically, body massage will positively affect your body’s circulatory, lymphatic and neuromuscular systems.

Injury Rehabilitation

Poor technique and impact trauma are the most common causes of injury, together with overuse injury caused through repetitive trauma to the tissues over a period of time. The greatest cause of injury is a lack of fitness for the activity.

The aim of rehabilitation is to maintain and increase fitness and improve all round physical ability with particular emphasis on restoring the injured limb to normality.

With my knowledge and experience of exercise prescription, together with my knowledge of physiology, anatomy and common sporting injuries, I will design a specific rehabilitation programme for your injury.

I will employ an exercise-based programme designed to correct specific problems or weaknesses.

For most injury rehabilitation programmes, I will work to the following aims:

I will ensure that a consultation at the outset of any programme is focused on a combination of information gathering and functional assessments. It is essential that an accurate analysis of your sports injury is made.

Your injury will heal effectively, in the shortest possible time, assuming that there has been an early diagnosis with appropriate treatment. Your general health, nutritional intake and local factors such as limb movement and blood supply will directly influence this.

* Balance and coordination exercises to improve the stability of the controlling muscles around the joint, promoting body awareness in relation to its position in space.

Pre/Post Natal Exercise

For mum’s to be, exercise before, during and after pregnancy is very beneficial for both mother and baby. I believe that it is important to emphasise that no real fitness gains take place whilst exercising during pregnancy. Instead, exercise should be seen as beneficial from a maintenance point of view. Maintaining a baseline level of fitness to help with the pregnancy, birth and to get back into training more easily and effectively after the birth.

However, it is possible to suggest several benefits of exercise at this time including:

Reduced maternal weight gain and fat accumulation (Clapp and Capeless ’90)

Weight gain was found to be an average of 3.6 kilograms (8 pounds) less in women who continued to exercise throughout pregnancy.

Reduction in perceived pain during labour (Varassi, Bazzano and Edwards ’89)

It was found that women who exercised moderately and regularly during their last trimester perceived their labour to be less painful compared to women who did not exercise. This may have been due to elevated levels of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.

Women who regularly exercise throughout pregnancy tend to have easier, shorter and less complicated labours (Graves ’99)

Graves quoted research from the University of Iowa, College of Medicine. It was found that women who exercised three times a week for 20 minutes or more throughout their first two trimesters had significantly shorter second stages of labour, compared to women who had stopped exercising.

Generally, women who exercise throughout pregnancy can maintain a better self-image and can be more positive about themselves, their pregnancy and their labour and delivery. Exercise is a very positive thing to do.

Following an initial consultation, I will ensure that your exercise programme is carefully monitored and constantly reviewed. Regular checkups with your doctor or midwife are ongoing and these are important to consider.

I believe that it is important to keep an open mind whilst promoting the health and fitness of both mother and baby through a fun and stimulating, effective and specific exercise programme.

It is quite possible that you will exercise for most of your pregnancy and from as soon as six weeks after the birth.

From your initial consultation with me, and throughout the pregnancy, I will offer explanation and support for the benefits of exercise during this time.
